Assessing the replication landscape in experimental linguistics

Replications are an integral part of cumulative experimental science. Yet many scientific disciplines do not replicate much because novel confirmatory findings valued over direct replications. To provide a systematic assessment the replication landscape in linguistics, present study estimated rates for 50,000 articles across 98 journals. We used automatic string matching using Web Science combined with in-depth manual inspections 274 papers. The median rate mentioning search “replicat*” was as low 1.7%. Subsequent analyses containing revealed that only 4% these contained replication, i.e., aims to arrive at same conclusions initial by exactly methodology. Less than half replications were performed independent researchers. Thus our data suggest 1 1250 linguistic contains replication. conclude that, similar neighboring disciplines, linguistics replicates very little, state affairs should be reflected upon.
